These chunky oversized isopods are fantastic, and while some may consider their colors to be drab or otherwise underwhelming, if you take a minute to really look at and appreciate them you’ll see they are much more than just “grey roly-polies,” and if you still disagree all I can really say is “how dare you?!” These have historically been thought to be Armadillo officinalis “Israel,” but there seems to be increasing doubt within the hobby that these are actually A. officinalis, so I will fall back to labelling them as Armadillo aff. officinalis “Israel.” Hailing from Israel you might suspect that they are fairly dry tolerant, and indeed they are, but I find that they do still appreciate a moist side in their enclosure, and they will travel between the warm dry side and the cooler damp side often. My temperature gradient with these is the same as most of my heated bins, ~72–74°F at the cool end and 80–85°F at the warm end. Diet is the same as all isopods: leaf litter, rot wood, cuttlebone, vegetables, fish food. Oh! And the hissing part. Yeah apparently they can hiss via stridulation, but I have to say I have never heard mine do this; I choose to believe it’s because they trust and love me and feel it would be uncouth to do something as brash as hissing at me.
